I really thought this would have had an impact but it has had none.

Brown Water

To all who read these words through either the Sulphur-Carlyss Information Station or as it came across the News Break app understand first that the City of Sulphur has heard about this problem from its citizens as well as reading about the “ DIRTY LAUNDRY” of our fair city on nationally media as well, Erin Brocovich’s Blog.

I applaud these few who are trying to do so much for this fair towns people.

The City of Sulphur was praised by so many of us after the 2005 “Rita” hurricane and the 2006 hundred year flood left our town standing above many others that dwarf Sulphur in size, but not in taking care of its citizens. We, the town of Sulphur came through those events without even a boil advisory. Why were we able to accomplish such a task when so many others failed. The cities administration obviously cared about their town! They prepared the city systems to best be able to weather through. I can’t help but think that had they read the blog post of such a nationally known figure as Erin Brocovich they would have been as mortified as I was. I was not surprised to learn that this problem was limited to only one of the cities water plants. My only assumption was that even though this water plant with problems probably only served the older side, not the Maplewood or Carylss areas, the exposure would surely get the administration kicked into high gear. But I was disappointed when it appeared that nothing had really changed except for the press release that the city would be getting replacement filter media for the Water Plants reverse osmosis system.

I can’t help but wonder if we would have had that filter media changed before all the attention if we had not replaced almost every city administration building during a time when most of its citizens were still trying to make ends meet during what had been a very slow decade of recovery for not just our city but our nation.

Could we have rebuilt our local bridges, such as Elizabeth Street bridge, if some of the local increases in sales tax and water prices had been used to worry about the many, citizens, instead of the few, administration workers.

I’m not suggesting that those new larger facilities were not needed, as I’m on the outside and don’t know such details. But would they have been better prepared fiscally if they had done their expansions a little at a time.

I’m not anyone who knows the answers to these questions. I’m just the individual that has two almost new sets of light brown undershirts. We now do a visual test on our water before we wash our clothes. This is only trying to avoid the staining brown tap water because we all know it can be clear one second and brown the next.

So I conclude with my thanks to this group of individuals and businesses.

I wish I could upload my photos to add to the Sulphur LA collection! It often looks like someone did number two in the toilet though it's never used. When my bath water looks like the pictures you posted, I would drain it and try again until it began burning my skin. I use bottled water to drink, cook, and make coffee. The full flushing hydrant at the end of the road is a familiar sight. I hope you're able to help us.

What is the best course of action to take in my own life to assist in solving these issues? I just completed an associates in aquaculture and aquatic science and am ambivalent about my future studies. Environmental studies specializing in policy and law is an option I am considering for learning how to make real change. What are your thoughts?
