You can argue that there is a severe dysfunction that indirectly subsidize major tech. Ghost data centers is a shame best hidden from the public. But when it takes 10 years to build a power plant, and 2 years to build a data center floor. And DoE is an historic actor in national super computing. It's easier to explain, that even if you are Amazon or Google, it takes planning to avoid ghost data centers, as this needs to be cooked around expensive equipment that may have delivery problems. And expected life time closer to time to build a power plant, the problem is effect planning from DoE in support of the basic economy that AI can't possibly carry outside of green sky and blue grass promises and free fantasy. A big part of the problem is econonist that doesn't project based on infrastructure or industry complexity. There isn't a huge market garage shop cloud providers building these things. And a business model that land grab data center flooring and lobby for cheap power, assuming renting out the floor space will be lucrative decades ahead.

This is a surreal situation, a decade ago when I worked in HPC. We chatted and small talked about hearing the campus swimming pool and discussed a bit about what you can do with roughly 60C waste heat you can get out of these things. With a sense of humar for the environment, it may not be realistic to have the basement if sky scrapers full of cow with flat screens and music that power the heating with methane and cow body heat. There could basically be a fraction of a national suoerconouter in downtown basements, nothing ever runs on the whole thing, and then it's generally not so latency bound the distance is a problem. It's a scheduling and job placement problem that is solved.

In Nashville, DC Blox is preparing to build not one, but two Data Centers. Two buildings to sit side by side, one more than double the size of the original. The smaller one will be ~75,000sq ft, the second over 200,000sq ft and three stories tall.

It will be built on land immediately adjacent to the Nashville Zoo, where several species of endangered animals live and where breeding programs and scientific research and planning have already successfully released an almost extinct species of salamander, the Hellbender, back into the streams of the region. We are waiting to make sure they can re-establish a healthy breeding population in the wild.

We gathered over a half-million (500,000) signatures on a petition to stop them from building it. This Thursday, the city council met to attempt to pass two measures to permanently stop them from beginning to build.

But at that meeting, up stood an executive from DC Blox to tell the council and the people that they had already acquired the requisite permits to begin building. We don’t know who signed off on the permits. It was thought that they had the initial one, but not the full number to build.

We were wrong.

The executive stated that the noise would meet OSHA standards of not more than 80 decibels of noise at any given time.

But here’s the thing. Animals’ hearing, depending on the species, is up to 4 times as sensitive as a human. What we perceive as 80 decibels, goes up to ~100 decibels or more, again, depending on the species of animal. This is the constant level of noise they will hear.

This constant, uninterrupted exposure will impact the entirety of their existence, their behavior, their ability to cope, breed, eat, and just exist in their current location. It very well could impact the health of the animals as well. Remember, there are critically endangered species living in this Zoo.

This Data Center will be built right next to the parking lot of the Zoo. Only a chain link fence will separate the Center from the Zoo.

They (DC Blox) went around the public’s rights to oppose this facility and got the permits backhanded from some official in the Nashville City Council and government.

The worst part of it all is that the representative that announced this at the Council Meeting is the former, retired Planning Commissioner of Metro-Nashville.

We are out of options. I don’t know if there is anything that can be done now to stop this from going forward. The Cumberland River sits behind this proposed project. There are millions of homes; houses and communities downstream, including mine, from this travesty. The Cumberland already has massive issues with water quality. This will destroy any type of restoration project currently in place.

Erin, I am begging you. Please look at this article written by a man who lives near me. He lays out EXACTLY what is happening in our community outside of Washington DC. We are in the fight of our lives, and would be eternally grateful were you to attach your well regarded name to our cause. The case the developers brought against our referendum committee goes to Maryland's Supreme Court next Tuesday, 6/30/26. This is after 21,000 of us were ruled against in our desire to put the data center issue on our ballot in the fall.
