Every community has to stand together and fight their life. We have been fighting for almost 8 months in Fairfield, Maine and we are finally getting some results. We have 377 members as of today
Regulations are only as good as the enforcement. We can have the best laws, rules, regulations and they are worthless unless they are enforced. So who is in charge of enforcing these regulations? I think the enforcer should be named in every rule, law, code that is enacted and name the consequences if they fail to do their job. And it should be an elected official or governing body elected by the public. In other words we need to hold our elected officials and governing bodies responsible for doing their job and realize and enforce consequences for failing to do what they vowed and promised to do. Their #1 job is to protect and keep us safe. So failure to enforce Health and Safety Codes and Regulations is a violation of that promise and comes with immediate consequences. I do believe that a failure to uphold and secure our right to be free from the fear of 'forever chemicals" trespassing on our lives and livelihood is a criminal act of neglect and willful reckless disregard for our well being. It is a criminal action. That means consequences are time served in jail behind bars. We need to bring our elected officials into our world of cause and effect and that translates to consequences and accountability for their actions.
Thank you Erin this means so much. You are and have been my inspiration.
I am taking this thought to the next level. Having done ALL the lock step protests, marches, petitions, begging for mercy and pleading for our Board of Supervisors to do their job for the past 10 years to no avail. It is time for a change. Filed a 163 page formal complaint with the Grand Jury against the Board for failure to do their job and enforce the Underground Injection Control Code Title 40 CFR Section 144.11 on 11+ California CalGEM (Formerly DOGGR) cited CLASS I toxic waste disposal well violations and failure to enforce mandated capping and sealing of 44+ abandon wells at the Arroyo Grande Oil Field before issuing a Conditional Use Permit.
And I am researching how to file a Writ of Mandate against our Board of Supervisors, the lead agency for the AGOF, to force them to bring the AGOF into compliance with local, State and Federal Health and Safety Codes. Operators at the site have been illegally disposing of toxic radioactive and other harmful forever chemicals for over 20 years because our Board with full knowledge and intent never required the proper Health and Safety Code permits and certifications. So, I can’t blame the operators for doing what our Board allowed them to do. Our beef is not with the operators but rather with the governing board that has provided the operators a safe haven at our expense.
So our Board has been flipping us off with particular delight feeling very confident that there is nothing we can do about their abuse of power. Hopefully that is all about to change. The change is successfully implementing the process that requires immediate attention from the courts holding elected officials responsible for their actions and imposing immediate and dire consequences. The message to all elected officials: This is how we intend to do business with those that fail to do their job and do it right.
An extraordinary Writ requires extraordinary action from an extraordinary electorate. That would be US. This has never been done before. This is what change looks like.
PFAS is the poison that is killing our soils, water, animals and our current generation. Sewage sludge aka "Biosolids", and their unregulated land application is an environmental travesty. Please contact your legislators to push for testing, regulation and elimination of PFAS.
Talk about sticking around & bringing us/US down! Not only are PFAS leaching out of the bodies of mom's into the breast milk to nourish our babies it can also become air borne impacting our health & IAQ-indoor air quality & picked up through dust particles that our children crawl on the floor to also be inhaled & absorbed by skin & then it also leaches into our foods that we cook by our made in the USA pots & pans & then pour out from our faucets into our water supplies; all exposures to poisons are cumulative & detrimental... What we don't know can harm all of us/US... Canaries & birds inside homes can actually be overcome & die when someone forgets a pan on the stove because the noxious PFAS gases release into the air & the bird will succumb to the poison toxic air releases, so technically we're all the canaries inside our own homes too. Made in America & betrayed by corporate greed means we all feel the life-altering impacts inside & out. Capitalism is not the definition of democracy in lieu of the future for all our invaluable resources & all our kid's fate & sake. WORT 89.9FM Madison · Proposed bill seeks to address PFAS contamination, while protecting polluters
A piece of legislation currently making its way to the Wisconsin State Senate would establish a new grant program for communities looking to address PFAS contamination.
The chemicals are an endemic issue in Wisconsin’s waterways — and they’ve been tied to a number of adverse health effects.
But, legislative Democrats and environmental advocates are raising red flags over the bill, as it could protect polluters from facing legal consequences.
For more, our producer Jonah Chester spoke with Tony Wilkin Gibart, the Executive Director of Midwest Environmental Advocates.
This is a fantastic article
To bad it couldn’t be televised
