My daughter is researching PFAS remediation at the UofMN. She was just awarded a NSF grant to help fund her PhD. The announcement of the firing of the entire NSF board was worrisome on Monday. Let's hope the grant will be honored. Either way, she has funding via the 3M settlement and partnerships with local fresh water nonprofits. They are making some progress in the breakdown of the Chlorine-Flourine bonds that render PFAS a “forever chemical” for now. Hopefully it won't always be the case. The common sense solution would be to stop producing it and find a safer alternative. Regulating Data centers is essential and Congress needs to act. My mini Erin Brockovich can only do so much. Thanks for inspiring her with your tireless advocacy!!

That's so cool! She's my hero.

A government that fires its science board while someone's daughter builds tools to clean up its chemical legacy has achieved a certain clarity about which it values more.

l am studying public health, and I have gotten a taste of how hard it is to navigate the red tape of all this. Thank your daughter for me! And thank you for raising a great human being, you should be proud.

Good for her!!! That’s incredible!

They are using this time of chaos and confusion to jam through as many of these projects as possible. We need to slow it down and regulate

Hey, does your daughter or her lab need any volunteer help? Saying this legitimately as someone who lives nearby and feels strongly about this

Ally's avatar

Will note I have a chem degree from the UofM collecting dust if that makes any difference.

These are NOT good for humans, which includes the billionaires who can see nothing other than money for themselves in these self-inflicted disasters.

Haas's avatar

The curious thing about selfinflicted disasters is that the inflicters rarely experience them. That privilege falls exclusively to the people who had no vote in the matter.

We’ve got to block these data centers. We have to block concentration camps. It’s up to us. This is our America he is destroying and we will be his victims.

Who would have even imagined this shit 11 years ago?

Bravo!!! Well done indeed!!! This is something that is actually needed in EVERY COUNTRY! The race for AI tech domination, begins with infrastructure like these centres. They are total BS because despite the environmental and community damage they do, and the garbage tokens of "safety and sustainability" hey dont even deliver what they promise in terms of power. Its another way to look like they are solving problems, while actually creating more problems. But its very appealing to governments because it allows them to make it a line item in their budget= more taxes for the public, and the technocrats love it because it gives them governmrnt priority, unlimited slush funds, and endless profits while also accessing untold riches in data "gold".🤔🤨 the only people that lose are the communities and their health, property value and environment.😐

Governments love infrastructure that generates revenue for friends, health liabilities for strangers, and press releases for everyone.

Erin, how do we make it stop? The peeps have become lemmings 😔

Light pollution too.

We are fighting a water guzzling semi conductor factory. They claim they won't use PFAS… but just had our city sign an NDA to protect anything they stamp as confidential from public access thru city records. We see the enemy. Their name is SK Hynix.

Auckland Nww Zealand is building them thick and fast. Yes even way down here its happening NOW

Thank you!!!

This pisses me off…… we all know what's happening here! They know we're not stupid.his approval rating is almost sucking dirt, the Epstein file's aren't going away. and hopefully War Criminal, all of them!

Haas's avatar

Files do not go away by themselves. They go away because someone decides, at considerable effort and expense, that they should.

Robyn's avatar

Look at their histories, it will be the same not different, no matter the reassurances & contracts. Leopards & spots.

Don't forget the noise these centers make. That also drives down property centers.

Dee Dee's avatar

agree, could negatively effect one's property value

Every data center should be as self sufficient as possible for both energy and cooling needs. They should have solar arrays and/or wind farms and recirculating cooling systems with water being recooled and reused.

Efforts should be made to produce more energy-efficient, less toxic chips and other components. Communities need to know about how sites will be upgraded and what will happen if they become obsolete due to newer technology.

Communities also need contracts that permit inspections and the ability of law enforcement to access sites if investigating illegal activity.

Data centers sites are large. Can they be designed to be dual use, such as adding rooftop farming or solar energy production? Or would that be too risky due to the potential for lithium battery fires?

There are other considerations beyond data centers regarding big data and AI, such as privacy, copyright, validation of results, how AI use affects defamation and libel claims, etc.

In places like Maine, where there is a large seasonally dependent building heating load, there are great opportunities for geothermal batteries.
