One of the things I find most encouraging about this work is seeing community advocacy move from individual concern to coordinated action. The common thread seems to be organization—people sharing information, building partnerships, understanding the process, and staying engaged long enough to create accountability. That's also why the infrastructure supporting grassroots movements matters so much. Strong advocacy needs strong operations behind it.
We need a robust plan with community, government and corporate leaders all coming up with a way where we can preserve water, preserve land, keep electricity costs down and still have the technology that makes our work better. It can’t just be build a data center with no guardrails or ethics considerations. There has to be a better way forward for all involved. Other countries like Finland and Singapore are doing a better job of finding a humane path forward.
As extreme heat is one of the most dangerous natural disasters, and as many of the folks that are suffering from this as the poor, off the grid, old and unnoticed, are you also tracking this?

@Tom Joad here you have an overview of the fight against datacenters in rural America. I really hope your community get spared of this madness. But, keep an eye on your local politicians because mostly they give the autorisation without telling anybody publicly about it
We have a moratorium in place, just extended, in Oakley California, banning data centers, while we write the ordinance. We have 3 sister cities surrounding us. One city, Antioch, their residents are beginning to make noise about a potential data center that could affect the rest of us. It wasn't a ballot iniative. Our city council voted to ban data centers permanently after hearing from residents at city council meetings.
Nuclear power plants will be springing up next. Fact. It’s starting. The MAGA cult says Chinese people will not win in the AI race so now this need for more electricity will welcome big NUCLEAR POWER INDUSTRY. That’s their solution.
I haven’t heard anything from MAGA about the need for water our fresh water supply. But likely that Desalination Plants are probably going to be the oligarchs answer. But, of course, we see how the Orange Presidential Pedophile is giving away subsidies to his donors. Corrupt AI infrastructure is paid by us— it’s ALL PAID FOR BY THE TAXPAYERS.
I agree it is a problem the amount of water used by dairies. We at least get cheese from the use of water. Why is so much data collection necessary? I personally don't want my information available to whoever is wealthy enough to acquire it.
And please advise local and state governmental officials that the developer statements about data centers noise, traffic, volume of usage of electricity and water utilities are all PROJECTIONS not real data. Yet the developers continue to present these projections as facts. Require that the data centers be monitored by the state and local governments for the levels of usage and impacts like noise and traffic. We cannot permit the data center operators to self monitor and self report as they are incentivized to manipulate the data to limit their liability for any potential overuse of utilities and/or excessive noise / traffic.
I agree that our senators should act on this immediately to protect our citizens!
