It's questions like "do people have a right to clean water" that makes me, well, not want to be a human being anymore, due to the overwhelming burden of shame our species creates in me with its behavior. Did human beings invent water? Last I checked, the answer is no. It was put here, like us, by the Creator, and therefore, all of creation has an equal right to it.
Water is necessary for life. Are we really at the point now where we think some humans have the right to determine whether other human beings are even worthy of life? With our actions depriving people of life, and not because they committed a crime? Are we really at the point where we are willing to say, "Yeah, certain people shouldn't have clean water because, I don't know, their ancestors just didn't fight for it hard enough."
Seriously? When are we going to get over this "survival of the fittest" mythos--when only one person is left standing on the planet? Because if not, we need to let go of this false belief that only "some people are deserving of the necessities of life" or get real comfortable with the fact that we are all accessories to the murder of the innocent people who would have survived, had we not usurped the very resources necessary for survival (instead giving it to machines, like data centers).
Absolutely we have the right to clean water. The U.S. should change its policy so that manufacturers must prove chemicals safe before they are sold.
