Giving Tuesday is a movement that unleashes the power of radical generosity around the world. In 2022, 37 million donors gave more than $3 billion dollars to nonprofit organizations. That’s powerful!
Just a reminder that our newsletter is as important as ever. Earlier this month, the U.S. EPA released new data showing that hundreds of public drinking water systems have detected PFAS, per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances, also known as toxic, forever chemicals. These water systems provide drinking water to almost 46 million people.
Those findings come from water tests conducted as part of the EPA’s Fifth Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Rule, or UCMR5, which requires water utilities across the nation to test drinking water for 29 different PFAS compounds. Fewer than one-third of public water systems are testing their water in 2023.
PFAS exposure has been linked to a greater risk of cancer, as well as other health issues for the liver, immune system, cardiovascular system, and on human development.
Yet the agency is dragging its feet on regulations that would require more testing or eliminate this contaminant from our drinking water. And that’s just one chemical!
We need more people to be aware of what’s happening and to put the pressure on our elected officials to prioritize public health.
