Large Data Centers consume 5 M galloons of water daily and require 50MW or more of electrical energy, which is converted into 4,094,569,800 BTUs of heat energy daily, thus the huge cooling water requirement. The 4,000 DCs in the US so far are producing 1.6 X 10 to the 16th BTUs of heat energy DAILY. We are already in the climate emergency caused by global heating, driving climate collapse. This is insane!

There is going to be an AI Data Center 5 and half miles from my home , the AI Data Centers are popping up everywhere in the Lehigh Valley PA , Thanks for speaking up and helping to save Humanity

I’m adding this as an addendum to yesterday’s email asking my Governor to follow Gov Hochul’s lead on a moratorium, thank you!

Somehow check for bribes in city Council members banks

Okay, is there anything that you can do to help Van Buren township MI? they're building right now.And it's right across the street from where thousands of people are living in a subdivision, an apartments, including with my grandbabies, that are two and four. It'll be right next door to a college down.Just across the street from daycare, where babies are down the street from an elementary school. They already have a garbage dump that has risen. The cancer rate of the people living there plus u of m is going to be now building a nuclear research plant, less than five miles away from the data center!!! Can't anything be done to stop this???

Erin Brockovich's avatar

There's always a way! Get together, get organized, learn as much as you can and share that knowledge.

Elaine Winger's avatar

There is a small group of ladies trying to fight. The city council is the one that approved it without a vote and told the people basically theres nothing that can be done you stop ut and "they love datacenters!!!" Are you kidding me? My daughter had it filmed o n her phone. In addition, our democratic governor that at the end of her 4 years is promoting them and will not help. A lot of the residents feel like it's a last cause saying there's nothing they can do and stopped showing up to meetings, I went to Lansing our state Capitol nobody from the city showed up. Over all from MI i guesstimated less than 200 showed up. They've all given up.Now I'm seing for sales signs. In front of their homes. We don't see any local government representatives doing anything to help either.

What are top uses that data centers will do - data collection on people, sports betting, pornography … ? What are the true percentages?

this is what I’m saying - so appalling that Whitmer is blatantly running down that road.

El Sayed may or may not fulfill the rest of the policies you want for Michigan, but he’s the only one who would use that Senate seat to make a difference. This week, even more money was poured into the massive campaign to try to keep him out, so I hope you can see through it. I think the Stevens to El Sayed money was already 12 to 1, which speaks for itself. I hope your peace is preserved.

So, I was talking about this one with my hubster last night and I thought that I would share it with you all. I think that they are going to “flip” Cape Canaveral to high rises and he thinks that it is a toxic waste land that will be in litigation for the next century.

I try to keep up with issues and feel so bad about all this. Just one thing (among many) that I don’t understand:

Why do these data centers have to be so BIG and use so many resources? Have they got 25,000 workers in one HUGE building? Or are the buildings just full of machines?

I ask this because when I was an office manager in the 1980’s, computers were large and very expensive. Gradually, they got more efficient, smaller, more powerful and more affordable….

BUT WHY is this data center situation going in exactly the opposite direction in RIDICULOUS size, use of resources and trampling all over people’s rights?

If AI is SUPPOSED to be so smart, why can’t it figure out solutions and make the whole plan more efficient and less invasive?

femme phememe's avatar

If i may recommend: you may want to vote for Abdul El Sayed in the primary race, as Haley Stevens is hand-in-hand with big tech. He supports a moratorium, she says she’ll get them to pay more taxes so utility bills don’t go up - not even a half measure, imo

You probably already know. Sadly, the corporate Dems are generally not protecting the people from these things.

Suzanne Gaudette Way's avatar

Actually, the Democrats are active but without control of the 3 branches they are somewhat limited. However, I spend a lot of time listening to C-SPAN on my headphones This gives you A LOT of understanding of how congressional meetings and hearings work (or don’t) and WHY. The WHY of it is so important.

The Democrats, some Independents and even GOP

are finding the task, something like trying to stop a train racing down a very steep mountain. Farmers would say the horse got the bit in his teeth and there’s no controlling him.

I have heard that these centers are also surveillance centers. Has that use been discussed?

What is the point of ‘hidden’ comments, if nobody sees them? Just wondering because I’ve never noticed that note “2 replies hidden”.

Watching from El Paso Texas where we are having a recall of maybe two council members who voted for the META Data Center not far from where I live in West Texas. This is how ours was revealed that news revealed had already broke ground back in 2025. It is a little ways to the east of me, so I have not really gone there to see the progress of the project, though I did sign a petition over the weekend to recall Cynthia Trejo waiting to see the progress on this recall.

We are going to have some special guests from Texas on next week!

OnlytheTruth's avatar

That is great news because it seems that Meta is expanding on this location, and if you go to the link that I just found on the new name for this with that expansion, it is pretty clear that Wurldwide LLC is the front company that secured the rights and is still listed a kind of bait and switch it would seem. My first thought was that this would seem to have been obtained under false pretenses, where this looks to be happening the same way in other places. Thank you Erin for stepping up on this issue, this is not just going to take jobs, there is much more to this than we are being informed.

Deb E. Dee's avatar

Good idea. There are lots better things to spend precious energy building than these temples to avarice and meaninglessness . Such a waste of time and energy is destructive and unconscienable .

opie's avatar

isn't that creepy that AI says data centres shouldn't be build near human resources? AI is supposed to regurgitate information it has been fed, data in the real world, not think for itself. Obviously this isn't what happened here.

Erin Brockovich's avatar

Right?! That freaked me out too.

opie's avatar

It was telling you what you want to hear, not what it knows from real world evidence. It didn't tell the "truth".
